He graduated from the University of Detroit law school in 1973, from where he also holds a master’s in philosophy. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Texas law school for 27 years and continues to teach undergraduate writing courses in civil liberties. Harrington has handled landmark civil rights cases, published numerous academic and general articles, served on human rights delegations, and spoken on civil society in different areas of the world.
