Description

Contrary to all reasonable notions of sanity, back in the '90s, a small, unknown Amiga game developer by the name of International Computer Entertainment embarked upon the impossible challenge of adapting Akira - the Japanese post-apocalyptic animated cyberpunk film - for the home computer market.

As the Amiga's lifeblood ebbed away following Commodore's bankruptcy, it finally emerged, coughing and spluttering, handicapped by a new dawn of dwindling sales. It's a hodgepodge of platforming, shoot 'em upping and motorbiking, published both for the traditional Amiga computer-in-a-keyboard and CD32 Amiga console. I trace its origins, hauling the game into my workshop for a scrutinising MOT while attempting to decipher the ambitious, futuristic sci-fi classic movie of the manga.
