If her love rejected her, then she would fly away to a lone spot and never sing again. It is safe to say by looking at the obligato score that the flute represents the bird. The publishing company of Balmer and Weber in St. Louis, Missouri, began operation in 1848, at the hands of two brothers in law from German immigrant families.
