Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau (1931–2007) is considered by many to be the Mishomis, or grandfather, of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. The creator of the Woodland School of art and a prominent member of the Indian Group of Seven, Morrisseau is best known for using bright colours and portraying traditional stories, spiritual themes, and political messages in his work. Heralded as “the key figure at the centre of an indigenous art movement in Canada” by the National Chief of Assembly of First Nations, he shattered societal prejudices and stereotypes in the 1960s.//L’artiste anishinabé Norval Morrisseau (1931-2007) est considéré comme le Mishomis, ou le grand-père, de l’art autochtone contemporain au Canada.
