Description

Wikiconference USA 2014 Friendly Space Policy One page document detailing the so-called "Friendly Space Policy" of the 2014 Wikiconference USA, held at New York University, New York City, from May 30 to June 1, 2014. This policy follows boilerplate language created by Sumana Harihareswara of the Wikimedia Foundation, first published Jan. 21, 2012. Per: https://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?title=Friendly_space_policy&oldid=78694 The policy promises a "harassment-free event experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, or preferred Creative Commons license (and not limited to those aspects)." Characteristics not explicitly covered include age and nationality. In addition to derogatory comments about such fundamental personal characteristics, conference organizers added that "harassment also includes the non-contextual display of sexual images, deliberate intimidation, stalking, unwelcome following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention." Those deemed in violation of the policy were to be first warned, then removed from the conference by university staff or, if necessary, the police.
