Description

First Set of New Quadrilles, Composed & Arranged by Mr Musard, and Performed at Almack's, Argyll Rooms, &c, by Messrs Michau, Musard & Collinet, Chief of the Orchestra, at the Balls of the Court of France. Dedicated to the Ladies, Subscribers to Almacks.Phillippe Musard was the most prolific composer of Quadrille music that London has ever known. 50 of his Quadrille Sets were published in London between 1818 and 1827 in a series spanning three separate publishers; a further 89 or more sets in a second series between 1828 and 1839; and many more thereafter (he was referred to as the "King of Quadrilles" from around 1840). That's just London, many more were published elsewhere in Europe; from a London centric point of view this First Set of New Quadrilles is where he began. This edition is printed on paper watermarked for 1816, but there can be little doubt that the plates themselves date to 1818:- the Chappell plate numbers are from a range used in 1818, the set was advertised in the Morning Post newspaper for 30th May 1818, and they were registered for copyright at Stationer's Hall on the 10th July 1818. Musard and his band were regular performers at Almack's Assembly Rooms from 1818, his Quadrilles were invariably dedicated to the members of that most elite of assemblies. The figures of this set are similar to those of the First Set of Quadrilles. A suggested arrangement of them has been animated here:La Duchesse de Berri - https://www.regencydances.org/index.php?wL=2036La Duchesse de Noailles - https://www.regencydances.org/index.php?wL=2037Miss Aldborough - https://www.regencydances.org/index.php?wL=2038La Duchesse d'Orleans - https://www.regencydances.org/index.php?wL=2039La Carnaval de Venise - https://www.regencydances.org/index.php?wL=2040For more information on dancing the First Set of Quadrilles, see here: https://www.regencydances.org/paper021.php .
