Description

The Missa pro Translationi Sancti Olavi (Saint Olaf's Mass) by the English Composer Clive Strutt (b. 1942) consists of nine ecclesiastical items. The Mass can be used liturgically or performed in concert. The work is a revision of an earlier Festal Eucharist (1985) and is written in honour of Martyr King Olaf II Haraldson of Norway who was canonised at Nidaros and since the 13th century has been referred to as Rex Perpetuus Norvegiae ('Norway's Eternal King'). Saint Olaf is commemorated on the 29th July.   The Missa consists of the regular six Ordinary Roman Catholic items plus a further three pieces. There is a Sursum Corda with a Praefatio, a text in Greek and Latin from the Divine Liturgy of Saint James serving as an Orthodox Cherubic Hymn (Σιγησάτω πᾶσα σάρξ βροτεία/Sileat omnis caro mortalis) and a Paternoster in Old Norse (Faþer vár es ert í himenríki). The Cherubic Hymn unusually is scored for an oktavist (a bass singer schooled in the Russian Orthodox tradition who is able to sing down to contra B flat and lower).
