Description

Paine of Almack's No 9 Quadrilles Waltzes &c. as performed at the above Rooms with their proper figures in French & English, arranged for the Piano Forte & Respectfully Dedd to the Nobility and Subscribers at Almacks, by Jas Paine. This set of Quadrilles dates to early 1818 though this particular copy was printed in 1819 (the internal advertisement references the existence of Paine's 1819 12th Set, but not his 1819 13th Set); it was published through Falkner's Opera Music Warehouse and has been personally signed by James Paine himself. Paine advertised this set in 1818; the Morning Post newspaper for the 26th January 1818 recorded: "Quadrilles - This day is published PAINE of ALMACK'S 9th SET of QUADRILLES, the Title representing the Floor at Almack's on the evening of the Masked Ball. Also new Editions of Nos 1, 2 ,3 ,4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, each 4s, or the whole bound in one Book, 24s. Mr Paine requests persons will observe the Quadrilles have his Signature, and are published for him at Falkner's, No 3, Old Bond-street. None other are genuine. Jas Paine."This, Paine's 9th Set of Quadrilles, were the first to feature his new cover design; the earlier sets were subsequently republished using the new cover. The cover in turn emphasised Paine's connection to Almack's Assembly Rooms; this may have been an attempt to further distinguish his Quadrilles from those of his similarly named contemporary Edward Payne. The cover itself depicts a chalked floor from Almacks as designed by the celebrated floor-chalker Mr G. Glover; the Masked Ball from which the chalked image is reproduced was almost certainly held in July 1817, the Morning Post for the 11th July 1817 recorded of Almacks: "At half-past twelve o'clock the Quadrille sets mustered five, with eight performers, as usual, in each. They were magnificently attired in the costume of different nations, consisting of Croations, Danes, Peruvians, Tyrolese, and Poles. These parties entered the ball room, when the music struck up, two and two. The dances were executed with uncommon precision and taste."; the floor chalking allocated a specific amount of space to each group of dancers, the dancers having been prepared in advance with a specific "fancy dress" costume to wear. It's unlikely that Paine's 9th Set of Quadrilles would have been danced on this occasion, his 7th Set may have been part of the programme however, they were published in May 1817.A suggested arrangement of the 9th Set of Quadrilles has been animated here:La Diane - https://regencydances.org/index.php?wL=779L'Eucharis - https://regencydances.org/index.php?wL=780L'Egerie - https://regencydances.org/index.php?wL=781La Calypso - https://regencydances.org/index.php?wL=782La Carinthia - https://regencydances.org/index.php?wL=783For more information on James Paine see: https://www.regencydances.org/paper010.php .
